Meet the Slender-Snouted Crocodile: The Star of Our New Wildlife Birthday Card
Share
When most people think of crocodiles, they picture the powerful Nile crocodile or the fearsome saltwater giant. Hidden away in the rivers and wetlands of West and Central Africa, however, lives one of the world's rarest - and most fascinating - reptiles: the slender-snouted crocodile.
Most people have never even heard of this incredible species, which is exactly why I wanted to draw it.
With its long, narrow snout designed perfectly for catching fish (or cupcakes...), the slender-snouted crocodile is critically endangered and surprisingly little known. It's exactly the kind of hidden gem we love to celebrate at Wild Lines.
That's why we were thrilled to create a slender-snouted crocodile birthday card as part of our collaboration with the amazing team at Crocodiles of the World, the UK's only crocodile zoo.

In this post, I'll introduce you to this remarkable species, explain why it's so special, and share a little about the conservation work helping to protect it.
Who Is the Slender-Snouted Crocodile?
The slender-snouted crocodile (Mecistops cataphractus) is a bit of a mystery, even to scientists.
Unlike its more famous crocodile cousins, it's shy and elusive, preferring the quiet rivers, lakes and swamps of West and Central Africa. Its long, narrow snout isn't just distinctive - it has evolved perfectly for catching slippery fish with remarkable speed and precision.
Although it looks elegant compared with many other crocodilians, appearances can be deceptive. Like all crocodiles, it's a powerful predator and an important part of its ecosystem.
A Critically Endangered Species
What makes this crocodile even more extraordinary is its rarity.
The slender-snouted crocodile is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is considered one of the world's most threatened crocodilian species. Habitat loss, illegal hunting and the fragmentation of wetlands have all contributed to dramatic population declines.
Despite its elusive nature, it plays an important role in maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems by helping to regulate fish populations.
Protecting this species isn't just about saving one remarkable reptile - it's about protecting the rivers and wetlands that countless other species depend upon too.
Why This Crocodile?
When Crocodiles of the World approached me about creating greeting cards for their gift shop, I could easily have chosen one of the better-known crocodile species.
Instead, I kept coming back to the slender-snouted crocodile.
There's something wonderfully elegant about its shape. Its long, narrow snout immediately sets it apart, and I loved the idea of introducing people to a species they may never have encountered before.
Rather than drawing only the animals everyone already knows, I love celebrating wildlife that's often overlooked. If someone discovers a new favourite species because of a birthday card, that's a pretty good outcome.
About Crocodiles of the World
Nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside, Crocodiles of the World is the UK's only crocodile zoo and is home to more than 100 crocodiles, alligators and caimans representing 19 different species.
The zoo is dedicated to crocodilian conservation through education, research and carefully managed breeding programmes.
One of the species they work with is the slender-snouted crocodile, contributing to international efforts to maintain healthy captive populations and preserve valuable genetic diversity.
Just as importantly, they introduce thousands of visitors every year to these often misunderstood animals, helping people see crocodiles as much more than the villains they're often portrayed as.
Working with the team there was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate one of the world's most threatened reptiles through illustration.
Where to Find the Card
If you're looking for a birthday card that's a little different, the slender-snouted crocodile is a brilliant choice.
The card is available at the Crocodiles of the World gift shop, where visitors can discover this remarkable species while supporting the zoo's conservation mission.
You can also find it in the Wild Lines online shop alongside our growing collection of wildlife-inspired greeting cards and prints.
Final Thoughts
The slender-snouted crocodile may not be the world's most famous reptile, but it's certainly one of the most fascinating.
Through art, storytelling and partnerships with organisations like Crocodiles of the World, I hope more people will discover species they might otherwise never have encountered.
Every time someone learns about an endangered animal they've never heard of before, that's a small conservation success.
And if a birthday card can help start that conversation, then it's doing far more than simply celebrating someone's special day.
